As winter is fast approaching, it’s about time that my 1986 Merkur XR4Ti gets covered up and enjoys a few months rest in my grandmothers’ garage. It’s been nearly 2 years since I took delivery of it mid-December 2013 and a lot has happened since.

Feel free to read and/or re-read any and all articles I’ve written on this car !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , sort of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . also don’t forget to watch the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that my friend worked so hard to edit.

So before I stow the car away for the winter, I’d like to answer any questions you have about the car, about me, about anything really.

And if you haven’t got any questions, heres a large photodump of Merkur pictures amassed throughout my ownership.

You still have that? That’s AWESOME!!! Do many people recognize the car from the show?

I’ve had people recognize it a couple times from the show. What happens most is people see the Top Gear plate and say something like “wasn’t there one of these cars on Top Gear?” and I’ll tell them that it’s this one.

On 2 separate occasions I had random people yell at me while driving. The first pulled up next to me at a stoplight and yelled “Tanner Foust!” and the second yelled “Top Gear!” out of the passenger window of a moving Honda Civic. In both cases I had absolutely no idea how to respond but it was cool nonetheless.

One day I’ll have to make the journey to check it out. You live near like Fort Wayne or something, yeah? I’m down near Greenwood myself.

I’m up in Elkhart near South Bend. Spitting distance from Michigan.

That’s actually only a bit further than where we bought my 924, in Auburn. Have you ever gone there for the auction/the amazing ACD museum?

That’s the one museum in the area we have yet to visit. We always say we will, but never seem to find the time to actually go. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it.

The other is my dads car that he’s had for nearly 20 years. Was his daily driver when he first got it, it has since been retired to fun weekend/project car. It’s got all the fun go fast stuff on it. We’ve spent a lot of time working on his car, so it was really cool when I got the opportunity to buy yet another red Merkur XR4Ti. Mine may have the ‘pedigree’ but his is certainly the nicer of the two.

Why did Ford see fit to put those awful wheels on it, other car makers were going batshit with wheels in the 80’s, these are just bland.

These are actually after market Borbets, my car being a 1986 likely came with wheels like this:
